Many of the patients I see in San Antonio tell me the hardest part was picking up the phone. A bad experience as a kid, a fear of needles, worry about cost, or embarrassment that it's been years can keep anyone away. If that sounds like you, this article walks you through exactly what happens at Serenity Oaks Dental, so there are no surprises.
Why dental fear is so common
Dental anxiety is one of the most common fears there is, and it's not a weakness. It usually comes from one of a few places:
- A painful or rushed visit in the past, often in childhood
- Feeling out of control while lying back in the chair
- Sounds, smells or needles
- Worry about being judged for how long it's been
- Fear of the bill and not knowing the cost ahead of time
The good news: every one of these can be planned for. Here's how we do it.
Your visit, step by step
1. The phone call
When you call 210-545-3929 or book online, just tell us "I'm nervous." That one sentence lets us plan extra time and make sure you never feel rushed. You can also ask any question before you commit to anything.
2. Arriving
Our office is a bright, quiet space off Jones Maltsberger Road, near Thousand Oaks and Stone Oak. Look for our oak tree logo in the lobby and come through the glass doors to Suite 101. Our front desk team will greet you by name and get you checked in.
3. Talking first, not treating
Before anything happens, we sit down and talk. Tell us what worries you most. Some people want every detail explained. Others would rather not know. Either is completely fine.
4. A stop signal that you control
We agree on a signal, usually just raising your hand. Whenever you raise it, we stop. No questions, no pressure. You're in charge of the pace.
5. Starting small
Your first visit can be just an exam and low-dose digital X-rays, with no treatment that day. For new patients it's $99 for a comprehensive exam and full X-rays. You'll leave with a clear plan and time to think it over.
6. If you need treatment
We use a gentle technique and plenty of numbing, and we make sure you're completely numb before we begin. We explain each step before we do it, and you can take a break any time.
7. Clear costs, before anything
We check your insurance and tell you your cost up front, so the bill is never a surprise. No insurance? We offer monthly payment plans through Cherry.
Honest answers to the most common fears
"Will it hurt?"
Most checkups and cleanings don't hurt at all. For fillings and other treatment, we numb the area completely and check with you before we start. If anything feels uncomfortable, raise your hand and we'll stop and adjust.
"Will I get a lecture about how long it's been?"
Never. Whether it's been six months or sixteen years, you'll be welcomed, not judged. We focus on where you are now and what comes next.
"What if I have a lot of work to do?"
Then we make a plan together and take it one step at a time, starting with what matters most for your health and comfort. You decide the pace, and we'll explain the cost of each step so you can plan.
"What if I panic in the chair?"
Raise your hand. We'll stop, sit you up if you'd like, and give you all the time you need. Many patients also find that bringing headphones with music or a podcast helps them relax.
"The front lady is the sweetest and helpful, the assistant is attentive and caring and the dentist has a soft touch and speaks to you and not at you!"

"They made me feel very welcome and eased any concerns I had."

Why waiting usually makes it harder
Avoiding the dentist often turns a small, quick fix into a bigger one. A cavity that needs a simple filling today can need a crown or a root canal later. Coming in sooner usually means shorter, easier visits, and less to worry about.
