Is it more than snoring?
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway keeps narrowing or closing during sleep, so your breathing stops and starts through the night. Left untreated, it's linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and dangerous daytime drowsiness.
It's worth talking to your physician if you snore and also notice any of these:
- Someone has seen you stop breathing or gasp in your sleep
- You're tired during the day, even after a full night in bed
- You wake up with headaches or a dry mouth
- You doze off while reading, watching TV or driving
Only a sleep study can diagnose sleep apnea. If you feel drowsy while driving, pull over somewhere safe and get checked before driving again.
Who an oral appliance can help
- People who snore loudly
- Adults with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea
- People with sleep apnea who can't tolerate CPAP
- Frequent travelers who want something small and quiet
Your physician decides with you whether an appliance is right for your diagnosis.
How treatment works
The appliance looks like a slim mouthguard. It gently holds your lower jaw forward so your airway stays open.

Sleep apnea questions
Will my insurance cover it?
Oral appliances for diagnosed sleep apnea are often covered by medical insurance, not dental. We'll check your benefits before you start.
Do I have to stop using CPAP?
No. Never stop CPAP without your physician's agreement. Some people use an appliance alongside CPAP, or for travel.
Is this the same as a store-bought snoring guard?
No. Over-the-counter guards aren't fitted to your teeth and can move your bite. A custom appliance is adjusted precisely and checked over time.
