ToothacheThrobbing, sharp or constant pain
- Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the tooth.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label.
- Don't put aspirin directly on your gum. It can burn.
Broken or chipped toothA crack, chip or piece missing
- Save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Hold a cold compress on your cheek to keep swelling down.
- Chew on the other side until we see you.
Lost filling or crownSomething fell out
- Keep the crown safe and bring it with you.
- Avoid chewing on that side and very hot or cold drinks.
Swelling or bleeding gumsPuffy, sore or bleeding
- Rinse with warm salt water and hold a cold compress on your cheek.
- If swelling is spreading, or you have a fever or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the ER or call 911.
Knocked-out toothTime matters: call right away
- Hold it by the top, not the root, and gently rinse off dirt.
- Keep it moist in milk and come in as quickly as you can.
Broken dentureCracked, chipped or loose
- Keep all the pieces and bring them with you.
- Don't glue it yourself. Home glues can damage the denture.
